Social Design Project at the Netherlands Red Cross

HelpTrek

European migrant workers help address labor shortages in various sectors in the Netherlands. However, one-third of the EU migrant workers, particularly Central and Eastern Europeans with low-skilled backgrounds, are considered more vulnerable. EU migrant workers in vulnerable positions often delay seeking (informational) support until their situation has reached a critical stage. Access to essential information and care to meet fundamental human needs presents a significant challenge for EU migrant workers due to barriers, such as language, limited knowledge about the Dutch system and fear of costs. The project aimed to improve information literacy among EU migrant workers so that they are empowered to access the appropriate care when needed. HelpTrek, a gamified information service, was designed to motivate and engage EU migrant workers in acquiring essential information about the Dutch system and service providers.

Service / UX Project at the Netherlands Red Cross

Let op Elkaar wegwijzer

The Netherlands Red Cross is dedicated to support people in vulnerable situations through various interventions, including the Let op Elkaar Netwerk. The Let op Elkaar Netwerk aims to guide people in distress towards the appropriate care they need. However, volunteers at the Let op Elkaar helpline face challenges in efficiently accessing care information. An iterative participatory design approach was adopted to design the Let op Elkaar Wegwijzer, a service map that provides information on various service providers. The project explored opportunities for improvement, created the information architecture of the Let op Elkaar Wegwijzer, translated insights into prototypes of the service concept and evaluated the concepts with Red Cross employees and volunteers, resulting in an interactive prototype of the Let op Elkaar Wegwijzer aligned with the needs and expectations of multiple stakeholders.

Social Design Project with the PSV Foundation

Fitterbal

This Master project aimed to increase the effectiveness of PSV Foundations’ Fit in de Buurt programme through social design. Fit in de Buurt is an eight week lifestyle programme established by the PSV Foundation and  Partnerfonds Brainport Eindhoven, that aims to help citizens of Eindhoven adopt healthier behaviour. Using an iterative, participatory design process resulted in a proposed solution tailored to all actors’ needs: Fitterbal.
Fitterbal is a tangible addition to the lifestyle programme and aims to lower the threshold of changing health behaviour, by shifting focus to the insights most important to the participant. Building onto the ball one surface a week, using fill-in patches, makes insights personalised and highlights progress. Besides, its interactive nature utilises group dynamics. Both during and after the programme, the ball can be seen as a personalised trophy representing the progress and overall experience from Fit in de Buurt.

Design Research Project

An interactive Photo Album About the future

This design research project explored opportunities for designing an experience to prepare people living with early to mid-dementia for a future event, such as a museum visit or moving into a nursing home. The Rijksmuseum was used as example case and participants sensitized with three design probes (A: photo album, B: Street View and C: video) in an one-on-one research session. The three design probes all offered a glimpse of the Rijksmuseum. Qualitative data retrieved from the sessions provided insights about the preferences and experiences of people living with dementia with the designs, resulting in design suggestions for an interactive photo album about a future event. The project contributed to optimizing the preparation experience to increase the chance of pre-reminiscence.
